Deathstroke Actor Joe Manganiello Talks about Physically Preparing for Role

It was only last year that current Batman actor, Ben Affleck, tweeted a test footage of the infamous, one-eyed, armoured mercenary. Consequently, the internet became overflowing with the same question emitted from diehard Deathstroke fans of who would be portray the iconic DC villain. The questions ultimately subsided as Ben Affleck revealed actor Joe Manganiello (True Blood, Magic Mike) will don Deathstroke’s signature mask. 2017’s Justice League marks the violent mercenary’s DCEU debut and with him returning once again to trade blows with the Dark Knight in the now Matt Reeves-directed Batman film.

This will also be Deathstroke’s second live-action portrayal after appearing in The CW’s Arrow, played by Manu Bennett. The 40-year-old actor recently spoke to Robert Irvine Magazine about the strenuous physical preparation and hints on shooting commencement

Even having just reached 40, Manganiello is still in excellent physical condition. Despite his already muscular physique, Manganiello is totally committed to fully physicalising his character. He stated by saying, My trainer and I have started putting together some workouts that are specific to the character.

Sounds like Manganiello is tailoring his body to realise Deathstroke’s mastery over martial arts. Also that armour does not look light so he’ll definitely need the extra stamina. He further talked about undergoing combat training by saying, “I’ve also started Kung fu and chi gung training, and I’ve also started working with katanas.”

Yes, katanas! Along with his formidable martial arts mastery Deathstroke is acutely deadly in swordsmanship. Rest assured Manganiello is giving 110% to his super-villain role. Deathstroke’s swordmanship is such an integral part of his character and hearing about Manganiello’s astounding dedication will make many Deathstroke fans grin with delight.

As for hints on filming the actor quoted:

“The creative process needs to be respected and no one involved in this film wants to make anything less than an unbelievable film, a legendary film. The movie will start shooting whenever those pieces are in place and we know this is gonna be something that we’re proud of.”

While Manganiello didn’t specifically hint at a shooting date in particular; he does offer some insight into what will potentially lead into shooting. The Batman universe alone contains such an immersive mythos, so it’s great to hear everyone involved are taking their time to assemble this puzzle of a film.
