Director Matt Reeves Discussions with Warner Bros. Break Down

When Ben Affleck told us that he would no longer be directing the Batman movie, it seemed that Matt Reeves was set to take on the role. Now it seems that his engagement with the studio has broken down. Mr. Reeves recently engaged in discussions with Warner Bros. about the role and it seems that now, he has backed out of those conversations. While it seems that he has exited, THR says that he could come back into the fold.

Reasons for the breakdown in negotiations could be related to his level of creative control,  money, or the nature of the story. Unfortunately, we don’t know as yet. All we know is that Warner Bros. has a lot riding on a film dedicated to their most important character, Ben Affleck will reprise his role as the Dark Knight, and we have Deathstroke as the main villain. The movie will play a critical role in the success of the DC film universe, and Warner Bros. want to fill the director’s chair as soon as possible.

While WB likes the script, the level in which it may be further iterated on will depend on who becomes director of the film. Mark Hughes recently said that he has heard from a studio source regarding the future plan:

“That the script would need more rewrites, particularly with a new director joining the picture, was a given. How extensive the process will be — I’m hearing anything from ‘major rewrites’ to ‘a completely new script,’ including starting from scratch on the story if that’s what it takes — is unclear, not just to us but probably to those involved as well, since the new filmmaker might look at the story and script and decide there’s plenty to salvage that appeals to them.”
