As most fans know, the Dark Knight was created by Bob Kane. However, according to Marc Tyler Nobleman, writer of the book Bill the Boy Wonder: The Secret Co-Creator of Batman, Bill Finger deserves nearly all the credit for what we know of the Caped Crusader. In his Hulu original documentary, Batman & Bill, Nobleman insists that “Without Bill Finger, there is no Batman,” and DC seems to agree. With some negotiation, they have decided to officially list Finger as Batman’s co-creator.
After the release of his book, Marc said, “I did not know what to expect,” but people seemed interested in the recent revelation. “We want to support giving this guy the credit he never got in his life,” Nobleman said. He also stated that 98% of what we know about Batman came from Bill. Most dedicated fans just want to see Finger get his due, and it would seem he is.
With a hand in making villains like the Joker and Penguin, it’s well deserved to say the least. Adding Batman to his list of creations is nothing short of iconic. Nobleman declared, “There are still Batman fans who don’t know. So whenever I can talk about this, I will.”
Watching the film, you’ll notice the story is drawn as if it were a comic. This is both an aesthetic choice and the solution to a visual dilemma. Since only 14 photographs of the late Bill Finger exist, animating the story gave a pleasant answer to the problem.
You should expect to see the documentary on Hulu in May.
