Geoff Johns Teases New DC TV Announcement

With 2016 over, DC has wrapped up another successful year of television programs. But with new seasons in production for as few as eight shows containing DC Comics properties, there is no sign of slowing down; while tweeting out for his end-of-year-wrap-up, DC Entertainment President and Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns hinted at yet another DC TV show that will be announced this year.

Now, of course, this tweet doesn’t contain all of the DC TV series, and this is likely due to the character limit on Twitter, but there are a number of other series currently in production who have yet to hit the airwaves. One of these is Powerless, which premieres in the spring, and another is Black Lightning, which is in development from Greg Berlanti, the producer behind The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow.

It has been rumored frequently that The CW is going to pick up a fifth series to enter into their “Arrowverse,” and considering they already run DC programming on the first four nights of the week, a Friday show would round out a full five days of DC entertainment. However it has also been announced that, upon its mid-season return, Legends of Tomorrow will be making the move to Tuesday nights post-Flash in order to make room for the new Archie Comics adaption, Riverdale. So while it seems unlikely that this new announcement could be a fifth CW show, it is still completely possible.

Black Lightning

Among the speculations, there is one show that stands out as a very likely candidate: the aforementioned Black Lightning series in development at FOX. Back in September 2016, it was announced that FOX had acquired the rights to produce a series based on the DC Comics hero, with a pilot commitment put in place coming from Greg Berlanti. It seems as though there is a good chance this could be the announcement Johns was talking about, but then again, it could be the second season of Constantine we all want so badly.

For now, we just have to sit and wait. The announcement is likely to come within the next few months, so keep your eyes peeled for when it does! Let us know in the comments below what you think the announcement will be, and whether you want to see a Black Lightning series on FOX.
