Costume Designer Reveals Alternate Conceptual Looks for ‘Suicide Squad’

As we’re winding down for the physical media release of Suicide Squad, it seems a ton of behind-the-scenes stuff is surfacing online that will be included in the Blu-ray and some that likely won’t. Artist and costume designer Tina Charad who worked on Suicide Squad to help bring those colorful representations to life, recently posted on her website several photos of tattoos, costumes, and accessories for Harley Quinn, the Joker, Katana, Killer Croc, Captan Boomerang, Diablo, and Enchantress.

From conception to creation, it seems that Charad had the most input on Harley Quin and the Joker, as she designed and fabricated their tattoos, hair, makeup, costumes, and jewelry.

Based on the photos, it seems that Harley was meant to invoke a more sad clown look.

Take a look below:

This is a make up video test.

It seems like she was going to be a decidedly more grungy and tragic character. I mean, look at the choice to make her breasts the eyes of her Joker tattoo! While it’s certainly interesting to see, I’m happy with the final product.

The Joker, however, seemed like he was going to be a far more vibrant and flamboyant character, as his clothes were going to include a lot of gold. It is a little hard to imagine Leto’s Joker to be any more flamboyant than he already is, but take a look:

Although I’m not quite happy with the final design of the Joker, it’s far better than the one we could have gotten.

For Katana, it seems like Charad dabbled in both traditional samurai and contemporary Japanese biker. Although I’m not dissatisfied with the Katana we got on screen, I wouldn’t mind this version either.

It turns out that Killer Croc also changed considerably during the creation process. While, we eventually got a simple man who likes BET and hoodies, he would have also been a biker as well, complete with multiple patch designs as well as a leather jackets.

Charad also shared a few changes for Diablo and Boomerang. It seems like Diablo’s tattoos and costumes were modified, but she didn’t go into too much detail. Boomerang seems like he was limited to various jackets that reveal a little more about his past. It was also shared how vastly different Enchantress looked at conception from tattoos to costume.

Take a look below:

I like that Charad put that much into the level of details on the tattoos, however, it would have likely been lost on us unless she worked on a XXX porn parody of Suicide Squad because there’s no way we were ever going to see Enchantress’ crotch and butt tattoos or Harley’s boob and butt tattoos.

Overall, Charad’s designs offered a interesting look at how most of the Squad were going to be members of alternate and slightly deviant lifestyles, as she took influences from punk, grunge, biker, and gang culture. Read up on her insights here.

What do you think? Would you have preferred some of these looks instead?

Suicide Squad: Extended Cut is currently out on Digital HD, while Blu-ray will hit shelves on December 13.
