We are only 3 days away from the release of Suicide Squad, arguably the most anticipated movie this summer, and the tracking certainly looks like a great opening weekend is upon us. According to Comic Book Resources, the film is predicted to make somewhere between $130-140 million domestically this weekend. If it passes $135 million, it will beat out Finding Dory for the year’s third-highest opener.
Suicide Squad has actually been tracking well for the past month now, ever since pre-order tickets were released. Only two weeks ago, it was estimated to make $115 million. It then bumped up to an estimated $125 million last week. With this steady increase in predictions, it appears that the film has the potential to beat out Deadpool’s opening weekend numbers of $132 million. Whether it was have the legs to stay in theaters, is another thing all together.
The film has so far generated some positive word of mouth from those lucky enough to see it in advance. The pre-release negative feedback for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice clearly had an immense impact on its overall theatrical run. With Suicide Squad being set in the same universe, one can only hope it receives enough initial praise to break free from any lingering negative biases toward DC Comics films.
Suicide Squad stars a huge cast which features Jared Leto as the Joker, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Will Smith as Deadshot, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress , Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc, Karen Fukuhara as Katana, Jay Hernandez as El Diablo and Adam Beach as Slipknot. The film is set to release on August 5th.
