Four Collectible ‘Suicide Squad’ Entertainment Weekly Covers on Sale

Keep the hype bus going. It was inevitable. With only a month left until we fnally see the Suicide Squad on the big screen, we’re seeing them on the cover of Entertainment Weekly. Like Batman v Superman before it, the print edition of EW is doing a feature on Suicide Squad, but because there are so many characters in this upcoming film, we’re getting four collectible covers.

Check them out below:

There’s nothing particularly interesting about the majority of them. Just three various members of the cast; two standing in the background, while one appears in the middle, more towards the foreground. The only interesting one seems to be the Joker and Harley one as it bears a similarity to Alex Ross’ iconic cover featuring the Joker clad in a tuxedo holding Harley Quinn.

The digital article advertising the print copies (currently on newsstands as of Friday), briefly discusses the plot of the flick. Intent to find a contingency plan lest another alien presence arrives on Earth, government intelligence official, Amanda Waller, assembles a squad of criminals with abilities and powers. After nabbing Cara Delevingne’s Enchantress, Midway City is threatened by a “powerful mystical enemy.” Rick Flagg and Katana are leading the motley crew, enforced by WayneTech Enterprises’ explosive collars.

The article starts with a quote from writer/director David Ayer, who comments on the sudden explosion of popularity for the band of antiheroes. He says:

“Two years ago Suicide Squad was a tertiary [DC property]. No one knew anything about it. It was a cool little playground, and I was going to go make my movie. Now it’s like the hype bus. All of the attention has swung onto it, and it has to carry a lot more weight than it was ever intended to. I think it can sustain it. But it’s a lot of pressure. You definitely feel the pressure.”

It’s interesting to think that Entertainment Weekly can remain so relevant despite the slow languishing of print media. I remember eagerly consumig an issue featuring a cover story on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

If you’re a fan of those covers, they’re available now on newsstands everywhere.

Suicide Squad will hit theatres on August 5th.
