‘Justice League’ Villain Confirmed: Steppenwolf

Justice League news day continues! Deborah Snyder, executive producer of the upcoming DC Comics team-up film, took some time to chat with the press on the film set of Justice League. Den of Geek caught the quote, as Snyder revealed who the main villain of the film will be, “We are cheeky I know, but obviously it’s Steppenwolf.”

Created by Jack Kirby, Steppenwolf made his first appearance in the 1972 comic New Gods #7. Steppenwolf is the uncle of Darkseid, the villain fans expected to hear about after seeing the Omega symbol and the parademons in Batman’s vision of the future in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Darkseid may very will still be in Justice League, but it appears that Steppenwolf will be pulling the strings.

Warner Bros. did release a clip back in April revealing that Jesse Eisenberg had met with a creature that resembled Steppenwolf. The clip was entitled “Communion,” and can be seen below. When asked about this, Deborah Snyder commented that they are still working on his final appearance in the film.

As to who might be playing the villain, Deborah Snyder had this to say:

[We’re] not completely closed, but we’re close! We hear what everyone has to say because we care what the fans say. At the same time, each story that we’re telling is a completely different story, and I think what’s really great is where we’re going is kind of what the audiences wanted. We just had to take the characters from somewhere to bring them up to where they are.

What does the Justice League face when fighting against this new foe? Steppenwolf is said to be immortal with superhuman speed and strength. As a military leader, he served as the head of Apokolips’ army. Steppenwolf’s weapons of choice include a cable-snare that fires lethal radion beams, as well as his electro-axe. He is skilled with the sword and a master at hand-to-hand combat.

Zack Snyder also had some words to say about the magnitude of such a villain:

Well you know, Kirby’s crazy in the greatest way. I think inherently when you start to talk about [this] and a bad guy that would justify the Justice League… I think you have to have a good threat that’s fun and kind of crazy.

Justice League will arrive in cinemas on November 17th, 2017.
