The MPAA has officially rated David Ayer’s Suicide Squad PG-13 “for sequences of violence and action throughout, disturbing behavior, suggestive content and language.”
Regarding Suicide Squad‘s rating, writer and director David Ayer seemed to imply that the PG-13 rating would not hinder the quality of the film when he said:
We were always going to hit the PG-13 rating. But the film is meant to be that. It’s got edge, and it’s got attitude. And it’s got its own voice…There’s a lot in the film that’s going to surprise people.
Furthermore, Ayer expressed interest in the possibility of an R-rated sequel to Suicide Squad by stating that such an endeavor would be “worth lobbying for.” Considering the dark, gritty, and violent nature of Ayer’s previous films, which include crime dramas such as Training Day, Harsh Times, and End of Watch, one can either imagine or hope that Suicide Squad will provide a particular caliber of darkness that should be satisfying.
Finally, considering the anal beads, dead animals, and other odd trinkets Jared Leto gifted to his cast members during the production of Suicide Squad, one should expect the “disturbing behavior” aspect of the film’s rating reasons to be highly interesting, to say the very least.
Who would like an R-rated Suicide Squad sequel?
