Jared Leto Discusses The Development of His Joker Laugh

By now, you have no doubt seen at least one trailer for Suicide Squad and had some sort of a glimpse of Jared Leto’s interpretation of the Joker. What we haven’t heard too much of are the various laughs he has developed for the iconic villain.

Leto had the following to say regarding the honing of his cackling when recently appearing on CNBC’s Squawk Box:

“I worked on the laugh walking around the streets of New York and Toronto, and I kinda would walk around the streets and see what laughs would get under people’s skin. You know when you hear someone laugh at a restaurant? It’s a little jarring. I tried them out. And I kind of got to a place where I would laugh and people are always turning around like, ‘Who is this creepy guy behind me?’”

That actually does sound like a pretty good way of finding the right laughs that would evoke a reaction. It’s been publicly noted that Leto went the “method” route with his portrayal of the Clown Prince of Crime, as several of his co-stars said he stayed in character for the duration of filming. Let us also not forget his sending Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn) a pet rat and Will Smith (Deadshot) used condoms as gifts.

Suicide Squad opens in theaters on August 5.
