Writer & Artist: Neal Adams
When reading the latest issue of Superman: The Coming of the Supermen, I noticed that Neal Adams seems to have culled together various elements of the Superman mythos. This obviously exists outside of current continuity, yet honors what came before.
Here’s what you need to know: Apokolips was destroyed; New Krypton occupies the same orbit as Earth, only it exists on the opposite side of the sun; and Darkseid had taken up residence there. In fact, there’s a pretty cool panel that shows the forces of Darkseid slowly consuming the planet, starting from one end and making it look more like home.
As you can probably tell, the many pieces of Adams’ puzzle are falling into place. It turns out the three Supermen we recently met actually hail from New Krypton and require Kal-El’s help. He agrees to assist, not only to save his people, but to recover that kid Rafi that’s been around for some reason.
Besides much Kryptonian on Apokoliptian violence, you can also look forward to seeing Superman engage in a rare spaceship battle as well as the return of Darkseid. Something is going on between the Dark Lord and Lex Luthor and I’m interested in seeing how that plays out. Then again, regular readers of my reviews know including Darkseid is an easy way for any story to get my attention.
While the dialogue still isn’t perfect, it has slightly improved from the previous issue and I continue to love how the artwork takes me back to yesteryear. Superman: The Coming of the Supermen may not be bulletproof, but I look forward to each issue of this mini-series because it’s a ton of fun. Therefore, Neal Adams has done his job.
