Considering this is a bit of a light week for new releases when it comes to DC, I recommend you check out Aquaman #50. Not only is it a great comic book, it also gives us a possible glimpse into the future because it is written by Dan Abnett, who will handle the title after the Rebirth launch.
If this issue is any indication of what’s to come, our favorite hero of the sea has a bright future indeed. Abnett crafts some witty, humorous dialogue; wait until you see Mera’s acclimation to the name “Aquawoman.” Brett Booth stops by to provide some rather sensational artwork that is given a real vibrancy thanks to Andrew Dalhouse’s colors. Bring some sunglasses (I mean that as a compliment).
As we are given a look at Atlantean diplomacy, Arthur takes part in a murder investigation the press is connecting with Atlantis. Considering that he intends to build a bridge with the surface world, he must not only partake to save lives, but also to make sure Atlantis’ name doesn’t become tarnished. What follows is the introduction of a new villain, Dead Water, who engages in a blockbuster battle with Aquaman himself.
Packed with charm, adventurism, and some police procedural elements, this oversized anniversary issue is an accessible read even for those who have never read an Aquaman comic. As I hinted earlier, it’s probably a good idea to read this in preparation of Rebirth. Not only that, I believe this to be one of the better #50’s DC has released this month.
