Review: ‘Gotham’ Ep. 3 Season 2- ‘The Last Laugh’

In this week’s episode of Gotham, Jerome and Barbara go full-on Joker and Harley Quinn, Alfred is an old perv, and the entire GCPD is on the trail of Essen’s murderer. Elsewhere, we catch up with Jerome’s blind father as he predicts the entirety of The Joker’s legacy some 20 years in the future… oh, and there’s going to be a magician.

Although I make my little quips and jokes, this week’s episode was not entirely terrible. I was extremely disappointed by the premiere of the second season and its second episode, but this outing was much better for me personally. We do get to see a glimpse of the greatness that Jerome and Barbara could be as future Joker and Harley Quinn, but that was, seemingly, cut short at the end of the episode.

Bit of a spoiler here, but Theo Galavan, in an unexpected and confusing move, kills Jerome at the height of the episode making everyone in Gotham believe he is some “White Knight.” Do I think Jerome is truly dead? No, but this does bring me to my biggest complaint for the episode. Earlier in the show, Jerome asks his blind-fortune-teller father about his future wherein the soothsayer reveals that Jerome will be a plague of “death and madness” on Gotham. The idea is then driven home by a montage of a bunch of Gotham-ites starting to frantically laugh and start to kill people. Confusing.

On a more positive note, I really did enjoy the moments between Bruce and Selina in this episode. I felt that their relationship was cut a bit short by the first season’s finale and I was afraid we wouldn’t see any more development with it, and I’m happy to be wrong. This episode gave me a glimpse into what I think the show should be for the remainder of the season, and I’m happy with this direction. Let’s just cross our fingers and hope that this good behavior continues.
