In a recent interview with Esquire, Christian Bale received the requisite Batman questions. Here’s what he had to say when asked if he had been approached to reprise his role of the Dark Knight in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and if he had been asked to play James Bond before Daniel Craig:
“No. I’ve never heard of that. Equally untrue about them coming to me for Batman, before Ben Affleck…I think it’s the right decision. People were talking about this obscene amount of money they were saying was thrown at me. No. I didn’t have a single conversation with anybody about ever playing the role again.”
When asked if he would play the character again, he gave the answer everyone who isn’t in denial expected.
“I think, probably with that, it’s never. Because I can’t help but feel it would just be a spoof on it. You know what I mean?”
There you have it. He’s done. End of story. Long live Affleck.
I don’t mean to sound overly cynical – and don’t get me wrong because I loved Bale as Batman – but the character has been played by many actors over the course of 75 years and will continue to be recast. For Nolan and Bale to continue a story that they felt had been definitively concluded in their trilogy would be nonsensical. Believe it or not, some people think that even after establishing a new continuity, Bale and Nolan could come back for another round. Don’t you think that would confuse moviegoers even in the slightest? I have faith in Ben Affleck and Zack Snyder and do believe that they will give us a stellar new take on The Batman in the new DC cinematic universe.
