Gotham Episode 2 Review

Gotham season 1 episode 2: “Selina Kyle”.

After premiering last week to mostly positive reviews (read DKN’s here and here), could Gotham ride the positive wave into the second episode, or would we see a lackluster second effort? Good news: surf’s up.

In this week’s episode, Gordon and Bullock investigate a child trafficking ring… which seems to also have taken little Selina Kyle, a.k.a. “Cat” (ugh). As they look to capture the person(s) responsible, Carmine Falcone checks up on Fish Mooney, Alfred plays brutal butler and Oswald Cobblepot hitches a ride, drinks a beer and finds a home…except it’s not all as friendly as that sounds. The detective team eventually busts the bad people and we end the episode with a “what?!” when Selina tells Gordon she knows who killed the Waynes.

I found this episode to be much better than the premiere. First off, we didn’t have as much thrown at us as last week. We stuck to a few of the main plot points, which added on to the stories driving the series. Gordon and Bullock (again) anchor the show, while Cobblepot continues to be intriguing and may be my favorite interpretation of the character… in ANY form. This guy is nailing it. We see Edward Nigma (who I can’t wait to have a breakout episode), I’m liking the dynamic between Mooney and Falcone and I didn’t shiver when Selina actually spoke.

Gotham was already off to a great start, but has kept up its pace for the second episode. Let’s hope it’s just the beginning of a long run.

Rating: 7.5/10
