So Much For That ‘No Jokes In DC Movies’ Rumor

You’ve probably seen at least one person linking an article having to do with a ridiculous “no jokes in DC movies” rumor at some point in the past week on your Facebook timeline. Didn’t it strike you as the slightest bit absurd? Seeing as how any rumor posted online is taken as absolute fact by many, playing damage control can often prove futile.

You know how it goes: one site has the “exclusive” on the rumor and then the rest report on it for the heck of it. Then you have people making the erroneous statement that it was reported by “multiple sources”. Incorrect. It had one source and then other sites write stories about, some even telling you to take it with a grain of salt. Luckily, nobody here at DKN gave it the time of day. I will if only to debunk it.

Earlier today, it was revealed that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will play Black Adam in a Shazam movie. Seeing as how Shazam, the film’s hero, is a boy who becomes a grown up superhero by saying a magic word, don’t you think a film like this will have quite a bit of humor? It will. New Line President Toby Emmerich had this to say to Entertainment Weekly:

“It feels to me like Shazam will have a tone unto itself. It’s a DC comic, but it’s not a Justice League character, and it’s not a Marvel comic. The tone and the feeling of the movie will be different from the other range of comic book movies.”

He also says it “will have a sense of fun and a sense of humor. But the stakes have to be real.” Now don’t cry semantics and say that just because Shazam was said to not be a Justice League character that implies that the fictitious mandate has veracity.  Emmmerich continues:

“Black Adam is a complex character. The villain in superhero movies is often, I think, what makes the movie. And I thought Dwayne’s take on the character, and the way that he saw Black Adam, was really compelling and fun.”

The moral: Don’t believe everything you read online. If it sounds too ridiculous to be true, it likely is.
