In a recent interview with Playboy, legendary comic creator Frank Miller opened up about his thoughts and feelings on the big-screen adaptations of comics he wrote. Most of us know Alan Moore spits at any chance of his works getting the big-screen treatment. Any chance of Miller thinking the same?
Oh yes.
When people come out with movies about characters I’ve worked on, I always hate them. I have my own ideas about what the characters are like. I mean, I can’t watch a Batman movie. I’ve seen pieces of them, but I generally think, No, that’s not him. And I walk out of the theater before it’s over.
Tell us how you really feel frank. I mean, I can understand if the Batman you were watching was the 1997 disaster Batman & Robin… but Christopher Nolan’s “Dark Knight Trilogy?”
It includes all of them. I’m not condemning what he does. I don’t even understand it, except that he seems to think he owns the title Dark Knight. [laughs] He’s about 20 years too late for that. It’s been used.
Miller is obviously referring to his 1986 gem Batman:The Dark Knight Returns. However, does he really believe Nolan thinks he “owns” the Dark Knight? What?! Let me be frank (ha!), Christopher Nolan has made more of an impression with his three Batman movies than you have done with your 30+ years of comic creating. If you think I’m sounding crazy, ask everyone you know 1) if they know who Frank Miller is and 2) if they’ve seen The Dark Knight. 90% of movie goers who went to see “Dark Knight” flicks have never read a Frank Miller comic, nor have they ever even heard of the guy.
Look, I have respect for the guy and really dig his work. But he sounds like a grumpy old man who is bummed that people may have forgotten about him.
No, Frank… they are just trying to forget about The Spirit…
