Batman #33 Review

Synopsis: It’s been one hell of a year in Gotham City, and it all comes down to this: Batman vs. The Riddler! Gotham City and the Dark Knight will never be the same! Don’t miss this special, extra-sized finale of “Zero Year!”

Scott Snyder wraps the four-part story “Savage City”, and concludes “Zero Year” this week. Did Batman save the city? Were there any casualties? Does the Riddler become idolized as the smartest man in Gotham? Issue #33 has the answers for you.

Snyder and artist Greg Capullo have been weaving this epic tale for a long time now, so there’s a lot of pressure this week to seek a powerful, satisfactory resolution. Was I disappointed? Not at all. Though the story didn’t end in a whimper, it also didn’t go out with a bang. Don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot of great in this issue, but it reminded me of Snyder’s “Court of the Owls” conclusion. I had loved every issue in the story, yet felt something was missing at the end. As with that finale, I can’t put my finger on it for this one either. Oh well, it’s my cross to bear.

Here are a few things to look for in the issue:

  • Final game
  • Fighting through pain
  • Riddle me this!
  • Court of Owls?
  • Birth of a sign
  • THE Riddler
  • Die to live
  • Oh, Julie
  • Alfred’s wish
  • Spoken for

I enjoyed the finale of “ZY”. It was fun, tense, unpredictable… and threw a few surprises your way just when you thought it was going to end. Even thought I found it “missing” something, I’m still happy with the conclusion.

Snyder and Capullo are a dream team. We know they are on the title until at least #50 and seem to just be getting started. So, sorry anyone who wants to take on the Dark Knight…

…he’s spoken for.
