In the wake of this weekend’s casting of Ben McKenzie as Jim Gordon, four more actors have joined the cast of Fox’s upcoming series Gotham. Robin Lord Taylor (The Walking Dead) will play Oswald Cobblepot and is described as: “the brains of a chess grandmaster and the morals of a jackal, Oswald Cobblepot is a low-level psychopath for gangster Fish Mooney who hides his sadistic lust for power behind an exquisitely polite demeanor.”
Additionally, Zabryna Guevara (Burn Notice) will play Captain (Sarah?) Essen. Sean Pertwee (Event Horizon) will assume the role of Alfred Pennyworth, “A tough-as-nails ex-marine from East London, Alfred Pennyworth has loyally served the Waynes. Now, in the wake of their tragic deaths, he’s fiercely protective of the young Bruce Wayne.” And Erin Richards (Being Human) will portray Barbara Kean, ER doctor and fiancee’ of Gordon. Casting of a young Bruce Wayne will probably come soon.
With a younger and tougher Alfred in a series that will chronicle Bruce’s journey to becoming Batman, I have a feeling that producers will take some inspiration from the graphic novel Batman: Earth One. In that interpretation, Bruce Wayne never left Gotham City before becoming the Caped Crusader. Unless they intend to eventually show Bruce globe hopping and separate him from the rest of the principal cast (that would be an odd move for a TV show, right?), I think it’s a decent bet that he will remain grounded in his hometown. But that’s just a hypothesis.
