Joseph Gordon-Levitt on Letterman — Why He’s Not the New Batman

When the Dark Knight Rises came out, the ending left a lot of speculation and controversy as to whether or not Joseph Gordon-Levitt would play the next Batman in the Justice League movie, and if not, whether he would play in a Nightwing movie. When Joseph Gordon-Levitt appeared on the Late Show a few nights ago, however, the answer was clarified.

“I’m not involved in [the new movies] at all,” said Gordon-Levitt, when asked whether or not he was supposed to have been the new Batman. “But I don’t know if they are so much a continuation of the Christopher Nolan Batman. . . I don’t think they’re really very connected.”

Gordon-Levitt said later in his interview that he thought the Nolan trilogy came to a good end. He added, “And it talks about in all three of the movies…it talks about how Batman is more than a man. It’s a symbol, and we all have a hero inside of us, so passing the mantle onto another person, another man, I think was a really good ending.”

“So why are people all upset that it’s Ben Affleck as Batman?” Letterman asked.

Gordon-Levitt replied, “I don’t know. I think he’s going to be really good.”
