Take A Load off, Batty

Everyone, please have a seat. Whoa, not so fast Batman!  Being in the limelight means there’s bound to be some backlash, and while its true that Batman has been associated with terrible events, (most recently the tragic event in Aurora, CO) its good to know that sometimes the controversy is down right laughable.  In a recent interview with Bleeding Cool, writer, Paul Jenkins, vented about some of his grievances with The Big Two, and shared an editorial note that he received.

In one scene, I had written that Batman is sitting on a rooftop during an intense conversation, close to a person who has been injured. The editorial comment: “We’re not sure you are “getting” the character because it’s common knowledge that Batman never sits down.”

While they this may seem quizzical to most, it seemed almost rage inducing to Paul, who went on to list instances where this statement was wrong.

From Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Strikes Again

To Alan Moore’s The Killing Joke

And, of course, Batman never sits down when he is in the Bat Cave looking at all those monitors. I think, perhaps, that if editorial comments are focused around, say, a character’s penchant for standing up as opposed to, say, the interactions between characters or the flow and structure of the story then the people behind such comments are missing the point. The requisite qualification for being a good editor does not have to be a degree in English (though that might help) but neither should it be a ridiculous adherence to past continuity, especially not a haphazard and inaccurate one.

This has turned into such hilarity that there is now even a Tumblr dedicated to The Dark Knight’s best sits.  On a personal note, I consider myself a pretty big Bat-fan, and was even inspired by Bruce to get my own ‘Brooding Chair’ (still looking, if anyone has recommendations) so learning that he can’t pull up a chair came as a big surprise.  It’s no secret that in The New 52, Batman is DC’s biggest gun, but apparently his hard work does not entitle him to taking a couple breaks.
