Heath Ledger’s ‘Joker Diary’ revealed in new documentary

Ever since Ledger’s untimely death after completing production of The Dark Knight as Joker, mentions of him and his work were abound by the cast and crew of the film, but we saw and heard little to no clips behind the scenes of Heath himself. Then we found out about the elusive and mysterious “Joker diary.” It’s a book Heath wrote in for a month before filming began as the Joker that allowed him to get inside the Clown Prince of Crime’s head and really become the Joker.

For months, the contents of this journal have been the topic of discussion and sparked the imagination of hundreds of thousands of fans. Now, thanks to a new documentary called “Too Young to Die,” we can finally see into Joker’s brain through Heath Ledger’s writing. Ledger’s father Kim goes through the tantalizing pages of the journal.

The video below is in English, but dubbed in French. Below the video is a translation.

TRANSLATION:

“This is the Joker’s diary. In order to inhabit his character, he (Heath) locked himself up in a hotel room for weeks. He would do that. He liked to dive into his characters, but this time he really took it up a notch. The hospital scene is interesting because when he was a kid, his sister Kate liked to dress him up as a nurse. He was really funny like that. He also was in the movie. This is a make-up test which was done eight months before. Before the end of the shooting he wrote ‘bye bye’ on the back of the page. It was hard to see this.”

It is sad, humbling and eye-opening all at once. But at least now we have had a chance to see some of what was in that journal.
