Infinite Crisis Profiles Shazam

Infinite Crisis, WB’s forthcoming Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA), now profiles the youth endowed with magical abilities chosen by an ancient wizard, Shazam.

These roll calls are becoming increasingly tiresome, but they are necessary, so I shall endure. The Justice Leaguers profiled thus far include Wonder Woman, The Flash, Zatanna and Green Lantern. From camp villainy, we have Doomsday, Poison Ivy, and the Joker. And from the alternate dimensions, we have Nightmare Batman, Gaslight Batman, Catwoman, and Joker.

Today’s the day that we’re getting the powerhouse Justice Leaguer first glimpsed in the profile for Doomsday, Shazam.

Take a look:

Now, let me get this out of the way first, I prefer Captain Marvel. It’s the name that I’m most accustomed to, but considering the popularity of the New 52 incarnation of the character and the confusion involving his name with a certain rival comic book company, Shazam seems appropriate. Plus, I actually like the hooded cape a bit more than the tiny child’s cape he sported on his shoulder.

Onto something that’s actually relevant, his gameplay. I’m not quite sure, but I think I’ve been giving a lot of contradictory information as to what I actually prefer in my characters. First off, I definitely do not like support characters, there’s no compromise for that. Most other character types are played by ear. For the most part, I think I prefer mid-ranged characters or melee-based characters, just not tanks. So here comes Shazam, who I happened to peep in the Doomsday profile and was particularly interested in seeing his profile. Now that I have his profile, I can sufficiently say that I like this character a lot. He’s almost all offense, which means he will be a force to be reckoned with on the field… which means folks better watch out when I bring this mofo into the fray. Some ways through the profile, I was wondering when we’d be getting his transformation move and was actually a bit apprehensive that we may not see it. You know, when he shouts that famous incantation and he is struck by a powerful bolt of lightning that can injure even the likes of Superman. But considering Turbine seems to know what their doing, I figured they’d save it for the ultimate and I was right. That ultimate is very, very cool. Yes, I will probably find myself running around as Billy Batson more than I probably should. I have very few criticisms and it’s mostly just nitpicking, like the exclusion of the Speed of Mercury and his very slow and limited fighting animation.

Turbine Studios are currently developing Infinite Crisis. There is no set release date for the game, but beta testing has officially begun. You can sign up here.

How do you like Shazam’s gameplay? Do you think Turbine embodied the character properly? Or do you think they fell short? Let me know.
