Game Informer’s news about the new Batman: Arkham series game continues to roll out these days. We know that Black Mask will be in the game, but what other details have come to the surface? Well, GI has kept it coming with a new video interview with the creative team behind the game such as writers Dooma Wendschuh aand creative director Eric Holmes. The interview sheds some new light on the story line as well as who and what we can expect in the upcoming video game. The story, as we know so far, takes place on Christmas Eve, and eight assassins have gathered with only one goal on their collective minds;’ Kill The Batman’. In the words of creative director Eric Holmes, this setting of Gotham at Christmas time was like saying “”Happy Birthday! You’ve got Cancer!”
That theme of having the good mixed in with the bad constantly being thrown at you is a critical one in this game according to Holmes. The game was inspired heavily by Batman Year One, but also the book, and a personal favorite of mine, Batman: Legends of The Dark Knight. Wendschuh goes into detail about the actual set up for the game. It begins with what he called “Batman’s worst nightmare” and to show the growth of a younger, more inexperienced Batman to the master vigilante that we see and play as in Arkham Asylum. From a rough around the edges hero who’s not very seasoned yet to someone who can survive and take down all of Arkham Asylum from the inside, where all his rogues have him on their territory. This Batman is used to being the strongest, fastest and smartest man in Gotham, as he’s used to only taking down small time thugs and gangsters, and he has not yet had to exert himself like he has in Arkham Asylum and Arkham City. This all changes on this particular Christmas eve where eight of the greatest assassins around will push Bruce Wayne to his absolute limits, something he has never had to do before.
Holmes says that Batman will be making “awesome mistakes”. He gives a particular example this; in one scene where he’s interrogating someone, he actually chokes him unconscious before he can get any information out of the suspect. However, the story isn’t just about the early days of how Batman grew into the badass we all know and love, but about how relationships formed, and how he grew into the hero we saw in Batman Arkham Asylum. It’s a story about “filling in the cracks” of the supporting cast, such as his relationship with Alfred, and his dealings with the Penguin. Of particular interest is how they explain the relationship between Batman and Alfred which is a different take on the old relationship that forms one of the cornerstone of the Batman mythos.
He sees Alfred as an extension of the death of his parents…We’re not telling the story of Batman beginning, we’re not telling the beginning of Arkham Asylum. We’re telling the story of the many various and important relationships that play out through the two games…We wanted to look at the Batman and Alfred relationship in a different way, to make it look more relatable. He sees Alfred as an over-bearing parental figure, and Alfred sees him squandering his wealth on these crazy escapades…The two of them will clash in the game, helping the story along as Batman tries to discover himself and his mission’s true meaning.
Alfred helps Batman in his crusade, and yet he’s at odds with how Batman chooses to do so. Holmes also takes some time to talk about the Penguin’s role as well, calling him “clearly untrustworthy” but is a vital source of information for the Batman. Wendschuh said that along with that they want to continue the themes of the previous games, but to explore the idea of “Law v. Justice”
In our game he has to decide whether he’s going to adhere to the Law, or break rules and deliver Justice to the people of Gotham
Batman: Arkham Origins hits the Wii U, PS3, Xbox 360, and PC on October 25th this year, along with it’s companion game Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate for the Vita and 3DS.
