Man of Steel Will ‘Open Door’ for More DC Movies

In two months time, I’ll most assuredly be waiting for Man of Steel not unlike a child waits for his ice cream, or whatever kids are into these days. It’ll involve a lot of pacing, spazzing out, and generally acting like an idiot until I get a chance to see the film. I know this because I did the exact same thing for Batman Begins in 2005, The Dark Knight in 2008, and The Dark Knight Rises last year. Not so much for Green Lantern, but let’s just pretend that doesn’t exist for the moment. I often think to myself, even if Superman gets a trilogy out of this deal, which I think the Man Of Tomorrow could use due to recent years, what about the rest of the DCU?

We’ve heard rumors and ideas here or there about the Justice League movie, and we’ve had other DC movies in and out of production due to development hell or various problems with the scripts. So what if Man Of Steel does what Green Lantern could not, give DC another massive blockbuster hit? Well, that’s where Entertainment Weekly comes in to answer my questions, as they got an interview with president of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, Jeff Robinov. EW’s issue for this week has a pretty cool Man of Steel cover, and so EW sat him down to get the skinny on what’s next after the Zack Snyder directed Superman movie. The first question out the gate is one on everyone’s mind, will Man of Steel make big DCU references and build toward other DC movies like the pre-Avengers movies did for Marvel?

I think you’ll see that, going forward, anything can live in this world,” he said. “[Nolan’s] Batman was deliberately and smartly positioned as a stand-alone. The world they lived in was very isolated without any knowledge of any other superheroes. What Zack and Chris have done with this film is allow you to really introduce other characters into the same world… We’ll announce something in the next several weeks that will hopefully position the DC characters and the movies we’re going to be making,

So maybe this will be like how Batman Begins only hinted at a few things before they were done down the line. Like the Joker Card at the end of that movie, or something along those lines. Perhaps a reference to Gotham, Central City, Keystone, etc. David S. Goyer, writer for the Dark Knight Trilogy and for the Man Of Steel, however, says the crew for the film doesn’t like the idea of sequel bait.

One of the things we dealt with on the Batman films is, Chris dislikes it when you plan something, when you say, ‘I’m going to follow this up in the next film’…He’s always said put everything you have into this film and then worry about the next film later. That gives the film its own integrity as opposed to being part of an overall plan. So of course the comic book fans, it’s hard not to think about [crossovers] but I, having done three Batman films and worked in that way, it’s definitely the approach we took with Man of Steel.

Speaking of  Batman, fans are eager to see if the Dark Knight trilogy will stand alone in it’s own continuity or if it’ll be a part of the same universe as Man Of Steel, with everyone hoping for some kind of World’s Finest film down the line. In regards to the Dark Knight Trilogy stand entirely alone, Robinov had something pretty interesting to say.

They do. Or they did. Where we go in the future is a whole other conversation

Things can be subject to change, huh? Interesting stuff. However, Robinov crushed rumors once and for all that Nolan would be producing the Justice League movie and that Bale would be back with him. The answer is still that the Dark Knight Trilogy director and Man of Steel producer will not be involved with the project. Nolan will be far to busy with his new film, Interstellar. While a disappointment to some, we should be looking at this as a chance for a brand new and exciting DC movie universe, and hope that Man Of Steel will do for DC what Iron-Man did for Marvel. Stay tuned for more DC Movie News in the coming weeks.
