In China, The Dark Knight Rises and The Amazing Spiderman are both releasing in the same week. That’s a lot of big movies in one week. Both TDKR and Spiderman release on August 27th the same night. Prometheus will release a week later on September 3rd. Do you think Batman can defeat Spidey in the box office over there? Warner Brothers wanted to delay TDKR until September, but obviously that failed. Everyone is pretty upset with China’s decision to release these movies in the same week. Although none of the companies will speak out about it in fear that they may offend the officials. China Film is also considering releasing Total Recall and The Bourne Legacy in the same week as well later on in September.
Authorities have been matching movies against each other in an effort to reduce their total ticket sales and limit the dominance of American movies at the box office so far this year. The reason for this stems from the fact that in the first six months of 2012, the box-office revenues for Chinese made films dropped 4.3% compared with the same period from last year. Ticket sales for foreign pictures, meanwhile, are up 90%, to $825 million.
Seems a bit odd, but that’s their country so they can do whatever they please. Personally I think it will be a good way to see what film does better internationally having to release the same week as another big blockbuster! So what do you think? Do you think this might settle the disputes we have over whose movie is number one? Tell us by commenting down below.
