James Gunn Discusses Top Fan Requests for Movie Batman

DC Studios co-president and Superman director James Gunn talked about the things that fans demanded the most for the eventual on-screen DCU version of Batman.

Recently on Threads, a fan debate sprung up over if the next live-action version of Batman should have white eyes- as opposed to the actor’s actual eyes. One fan asked Gunn to confirm if the white eyes was a top request and Gunn responded. According to Gunn, the number one thing that fans want from the next movie Batman is the classic grey and blue suit. Next, they want the bat-symbol with the traditional yellow badge, and then finally white eyes.

“The most requested thing would be the blue and grey. Then the yellow around the bat. And THEN the white eyes. But all of those things I find less important than the character himself, the writing, and the person who plays him. Individuals are making clear what they want to see. But even the most requested thing – the blue and grey – is split evenly with people who don’t want that. And the other two most requested things are also things just as many people say they don’t want to see. So you have to do what’s right by the specific film and story.”

Breaking Down James Gunn’s Statement

With all that being said, Gunn essentially said how trying to meet fan demands is tricky. He elaborated that despite the grey and blue costume color scheme being in high-demand, there are almost just as many people who do not want it. What is more important is if those superficial elements serve a function in the story. Think kind of like how fans got to see the white lenses on Batman in The Dark Knight. There was that one scene where he utilized white lenses on his mask to show the sonar vision to infiltrate the Joker’s hideout.

Not surprisingly, Gunn is more interested in making sure Batman gets a good casting, character development, and writing.  This should be something that all filmmakers strive for.
