This holiday season, DC Comics fans can open up a brand new Batman story scripted by the legendary Denny O’Neil. In December, O’Neil returns to DC Comics as part of the DC Universe Holiday Special 2017. No word yet on what his Batman story will entail, but his best-known endeavors are rooted in his 1970s run on Batman titles.

LEGENDARY CAREER

O’Neil brought Batman back to his darker roots after going through a period of lighter adventures inspired by the 1960s TV show. Comics historian Les Daniels observed that:

O’Neil’s interpretation of Batman as a vengeful obsessive-compulsive, which he modestly describes as a return to the roots, was actually an act of creative imagination that has influenced every subsequent version of the Dark Knight.

He would go on to co-create important DC / Batman characters including Ra’s al Ghul, Talia al Ghul, and Leslie Thompkins; while also reviving classic characters Two-Face and the Joker. The latter would have O’Neil bringing the character back to his roots as a homicidal maniac.

The anticipated book, with a story from returning legend O’Neil, hits shelves December 6th. With a cover by Andy Kubert, a price tag of $9.99, and stories about hope; this issue will certainly be a must read.
