Matt Reeves is starting from scratch on his upcoming Batman film.

Speaking with MTV’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, the director confirmed that he will not be using any script when moving forward with the upcoming film.

It’s a new story. It’s us starting again. And I’m excited about it, it’s going to be really cool.

The full episode, which lasts less than an hour, features a great discussion with the War fFor the Planet of the Apes helmer. Of course, he was asked about the Batman project (there’s no official title). In addition to saying they’re starting from scratch, he also described how he got the job from Warner Bros.

I talked less about exactly what I wanted to do, let’s say story-wise, ambition-wise, what I was going after emotionally and what I wanted point of view-wise. I figured they’re either going to go for that or they’re going to say “next” and we’ll look for someone else. And they were excited about it.

This is music to every Batman fan’s ears. Matt Reeves gets it. Apparently, Warner Bros. also gets it. They wanted to hire a great director, who wasn’t going to jump on board unless he can make a movie HIS way. Reeves was very professional in explaining how he takes on a project, respecting those who are fronting the money.

As for those Josh Gad pictures? Nobody has been talked to about casting.

Be Patient

So there you have it. Reeves has just finished War for the Planet of the Apes, is taking a little time off, then will jump into the world of the Dark Knight. Any rumors you’re seeing or hearing are nonsense. The director is just starting to think of the emotional story he wants to tell.

I can’t wait to see it already.
