Prior to production starting on Suicide Squad, Will Smith was in talks to return as Captain Steven Hiller in the sequel to Independence Day. We know, of course, that he went with playing Floyd Lawton aka Deadshot in Suicide Squad. Now, we find out why.

Smith revealed during a Q&A at Facebook Headquarters that he wanted to try something new. “I had to choose between the two of those. Even the choice of going to Suicide Squad — nothing about the qualities of the movie — but the choice of trying to go forward versus clinging and clawing backwards,” he said. “I do want to aggressively go forward and do new things and create and hopefully be able to stumble upon a new heyday.”

With a $325 million box office take worldwide, it seems like Smith made the better choice with Suicide Squad. Independence Day: Resurgence earned almost one-third of that total at $$103 million.

Suicide Squad  and Suicide Squad: The Extended Cut is available now on Digital HD, Blu Ray and DVD.
