Gotham: Ben McKenzie and Robin Lord Taylor Speak on Upcoming Villains

You might already know that Gotham has been renewed for a second season; some Batman fans love the show, some Batman fans hate it, but regardless, people are watching it.

Re-tellings, reboots, and adaptations can be rather exciting, particularly because you can’t quite expect things to go as you might assume them to go.  Your preconceived conceptions or notions of a particular character’s portrayal might be shattered, or they might be met to some extent. For example, Penguin isn’t a short, overweight cigar-smoking curmudgeon who ravenously consumes stinking, dead Mackeral, but he does have quite a nose and a knack for working his way about the Mob.

Regardless, Season 2 of Gotham is on the way, whether we like it or not, and meanwhile, Season 1 is still on the air.  As one might expect, more characters and further developments are on the way — no, not Batman.

Here’s what Gordon, or Ben McKenzie, had to say about a few new characters:

“We have some new villains coming in, including an origins story for the Scarecrow…the Graysons — Robin’s parents…”

McKenzie also informs us that we will soon witness Edward Nygma morph from a comic-relief character-type into something darker.  Additionally, McKenzie briefly touches upon the importance of maintaining a welcoming environment on set, during production.

In a separate video interview, Robin Lord Taylor, who portrays the Penguin, also gave us some informative words regarding characters.

He said:

“I’m mostly excited for people to finally see Penguin and the Riddler meet…it’s been a long time coming.”

Taylor also spoke on Edward Nygma’s turning from a comic-relief character to something possibly more sinister:

“I want someone else [i.e. the Riddler/Nygma] to bring the darkness…let’s share this…”

We can expect to see further developments in the Penguin’s entanglements within the Falcone and Maroni families, as he is “torn between the two” of them, despite primarily operating to serve selfish and ulterior motives.

Don’t forget to catch Gotham on FOX at 8/7c, perhaps while enjoying some Cannoli, but not if Oswald gave them to you.
