For most of us, there is no debate on the ending of The Dark Knight Rises. Batman saved the city, faked his death and lived happily ever after overseas with his new love, Selina Kyle. Alfred even manages to see this, so he can live the rest of his life in peace. However, the power of movies (and Christopher Nolan) managed to leave the ending of the Dark Knight Trilogy sort of open-ended, so fans can believe whatever they wanted.

It also may leave it open for the actors themselves, especially the star of the show Christian Bale, a.k.a. “Batman.” Bale recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly about his version of the ending and I can’t say I disagree with him.

[Alfred] was content with me being alive, and left because that was the life he wanted for him. I find it very interesting, and I think that with most films I tend to say… it’s what the audience thinks it is. My personal opinion is, no, it was not a dream. That that was for real, and he was just delighted to finally have freed himself from the privilege… ultimately the burden of being Bruce Wayne.

Well put, Mr. Bale. I have no problem with anyone that took this any other way. That’s how Christopher Nolan likes his movies anyway, and who am I to tell you what to think? Now grab a tissue, and watch that ending again:
