Batman: Eternal Art done by Jason Fabok,

Announced today was the new book that’ll be helmed by Scott Snyder, along with Jason Fabok and a revolving crew of Bat-writers including James Tynion IV, John Layman, Ray Fawkes, and Tim Seeley, called Batman: Eternal. The weekly will run for a year, and it will alter the Status Quo not just for Gotham City, but the Batman and his supporting cast. Snyder had this to say about Eternal.

“It’s a place for me to be able to work with good friends in terms of shaping Gotham in a bigger, grander and more game-changing way than ever before…We’re gonna give you the biggest, craziest and most fun stuff we’ve done on the book and in the world of Gotham.”

A weekly Batman title makes sense if you think about it. Batman is a consistently high seller, and Batman Incorporated ended this year, leaving a slot free for a new Bat-Book. Snyder says that the book was appealing to him because he gets to work with writers he admires for and they will “that set the stage for a new Gotham and new characters and a new set of stories that will take Batman into 2015.”. The first arc of Eternal will be written by Snyder and Tynion, exploring areas of Gotham City not seen often in Gotham. While Batman is still in it’s Zero Year arc, six years prior to the main comic continuity, the book will set the stage for Batman’s eventual return to the present day.

“We want this to be a place where you get to tell a story about anything you want in Gotham, so long as we’re also moving this big story forward in the background. You’ll see bombastic arcs as well but there’ll be plenty of room for Ray to explore some of the darker, more mystical aspects of Gotham that he loves or Tim to explore some of the crime we haven’t seen before…We’re five guys doing our best to give you an exciting Gotham that’s changing under the feet of its characters.””

Snyder and Tynion have planned out a lot of world building for Eternal, while Seeley begins to work on the character driven aspects of the story, as Layman begins to work on one of the best part of any Batman story, the villains. Fawkes is currently planning an arc where something very dark comes to Gotham City, something Snyder believes brings to life the tragic, haunting elements of Gotham City. Similar to Gotham Central, it’ll feature a multitude of peripheral characters and the most infamous denizens of the city, but at the forefront of the title, will be Batman.

Snyder isn’t just working on Eternal though, he is also going to be doing a story in the 27th issue of Detective Comics, as a nod to original comic that introduced the Caped Crusader 75 years ago. Along with Snyder, other Bat-Writers will be contributing to that issue, which is 96 pages in length. Writers Paul Dini, Brad Meltzer, Gregg Hurwitz and Peter Tomasi, Frank Miller and illustrators Neal Adams, Dustin Nguyen and Francesco Francavilla will all be helping to celebrate the Dark Knight’s 75th birthday. Cover Artists on the title will include Adams, Jim Lee, Greg Cupullo, Chris Burnham, Kelley Jones, Patrick Gleason, and Mike Allred.

Batman: Eternal will be out this spring and Detective Comics #27 will be released in January.
